Complete your Bachelor's degree in Nursing and advance your career

Even in a declining job market, the nationwide demand for skilled nurses is still strong. While nurses with varying degrees of education are needed in Indiana at virtually all medical facilities, advancing from RN diplomas and ADNs to a Bachelor Degree in Nursing will open up many more opportunities. Registered nurses who have their BSN degree can qualify for many types of nursing careers including medical facility administration, nurse management and case management roles within insurance companies. Nurse managers are responsible for decision making, scheduling, organizing and all other tasks performed by the lead nurse of a team.

Attaining a BSN degree will allow registered nurses interested in practicing within a specialized field of nursing to realize their dreams. Many nursing concentrations such as pediatrics, obstetrics and midwifery require nurses to hold a BSN degree for consideration. Nurses with a BSN can also pursue further education such as a PhD in Nursing or Masters of Science in Nursing to become qualified for such positions as nurse practitioner, certified nursing anesthetists or Nursing Director responsible for implementation and oversight of all nursing policies and procedures of a medical institution.

Advanced nursing degree classes include subjects outside the realm of clinical studies such as business management, employee relations, and finance. Coursework will go beyond clinical aspects into such topics as human resources, patient and family intervention and counseling, facility and program budgeting and accounting methods, and intensified communication skills programs.

Salaries might increase for an RN moving into a specialized nursing position requiring a BSN degree. In Indiana, the average salary for a BSN nurse is over $50,000 per year. Management positions requiring a BSN can average over $80,000 annually. Career paths requiring an MSN degree come with salaries in the six-figure range with the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist making close to $150,000 on average. Other benefits such as paid time off and more concrete schedules are usually perks associated with a higher level of education.

Both campus and online programs are available to complete an RN to BSN transition program. Online programs provide a working person with more flexibility. However, in most circumstances, a brick and mortar campus or teaching hospital needs to be in close proximity as some of the required clinical coursework must be completed in-person. Tuition varies depending on the type of program and the academic institution. Most online programs do not have waiting lists, but campuses have limited enrollments. Nine Indiana colleges and university campuses offer traditional BSN programs. Most Indiana University campuses offer MSN programs except for East and Northwest. Smaller colleges like Bethel, Goshen and Valparaiso are quite limited. Capacity and program intensity determine a selective 3.0 grade point average to be considered for admittance. Other factors are also considered, making Indiana nursing programs very competitive.
