Complete your Bachelor's degree in Nursing and advance your career

For those who have obtained their Registered Nurse (RN) designation through diploma or Associate’s Degree programs and are interested in earning their Bachelor’s degree, there are several programs in the state of Iowa designed specifically for this transition.

The University of Iowa and Upper Iowa University have two of the most prominent RN-BSN programs in the state. Both of these programs are nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Additional CCNE accredited programs in he state are listed below and available in various Iowa cities and counties. Registered nurses may be interested in obtaining their BSN so that they can obtain management-level nursing positions. These positions typically involve managing a team of 5-20 other nurses in a hospital setting or some other type of medical care facility. Registered nurses may also be interested in additional career opportunities that would justify a salary increase. Having a BSN can open doors to certain nursing positions that might not be available to less educated RNs.

The requirements for RN to BSN programs will typically include some combination of the following: evidence of CPR certification, RN license, evidence of meeting current health requirements, and a background check waiver. The health requirements can include a consent form, a medical history form, and evidence of vaccinations for measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), chicken pox, tetanus/diptheria, Hepatitis B series, and tuberculin (PPD) or chest x-ray. Potential students will also need to submit an application form and usually a fee.

Many RN to BSN programs offer flexible schedules with options for full-time or part-time coursework. Many programs also have options for some or all classes to be completed online. Full-time study can be completed in as little as 3 semesters. Part-time study may stretch the program to 5 semesters or more. Research all of the programs in your area to familiarize yourself with all of your options before sending in applications.

Coursework for RN to BSN programs will most likely include the following topics: human genetics, research, health systems, leadership, professional engagement, pathology, pubic health, health cake finance, and community. Classes will also include clinical experiences to give students first-hand practice to accompany their classroom learning.
