Complete your Bachelor's degree in Nursing and advance your career

The RN to BSN program is an accelerated path to a bachelor’s degree in nursing for those students who are already licensed Registered Nurses and hold an associate’s degree or diploma. There are several schools in Minnesota that offer an RN to BSN or BSN completion program. Because this is a program designed to keep working professionals in the work force, there are several online options, and even the campus-based schools offer evening and some online courses.

Online programs include Chamberlain University, College of St. Scholastica, Crown College, Globe University, Rasmussen College, Walden University, University of Phoenix, and University of Minnesota at both the Mankato and Moorhead campuses. Those who prefer a more traditional educational experience can choose from Augsburg College, Bermidji State University, Bethel University, Metropolitan State University, St. Catherine University, and Winona State University. All of these programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.

Admission for RN to BSN programs is competitive and based on past academic performance, workplace recommendations, and volunteer experience. Many programs will accept credit from prior education or work experience, and the NLN Nursing Acceleration Challenge Exams allow students to test out of courses that cover skills and knowledge they have already acquired in the workplace or through on-the-job training, putting them that much closer to their career goals. Coursework expands on the foundation of the associate’s degree and focuses on an advanced level of critical reasoning, research, experience-based practice, and leadership skills. Other topics such as sociology, psychology, and pharmacology can broaden a nurse’s knowledge base and career opportunities and provide a fresh perspective on the workplace.

Minnesota is experiencing a shortage of qualified nursing professionals, and the field of health care is growing more complex all the time. A BSN can open the door to more exciting and varied careers and significantly higher salary expectations. Many hospitals now consider a bachelor’s degree to be a benchmark for nurses, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics lists prospects for baccalaureate educated nurses as extremely positive.
